Sights and sounds in the local marine park | Tunku Abdul Rahman
Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, offers a vibrant underwater world perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. Comprising five islands—Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik, and Sulug—the park is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and rich marine biodiversity.
While exploring beneath the surface, divers and snorkellers are often greeted by colourful coral reefs teeming with life. Hard and soft corals create an intricate underwater landscape, sheltering a variety of tropical fish, including clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. Schools of damselfish shimmer in the sunlight, while curious anemonefish dart between sea anemones.
You may also spot larger marine creatures, such as cuttlefish, moray eels, and, occasionally, sea turtles, gliding gracefully by. In deeper waters, reef sharks and rays sometimes appear, adding a touch of excitement for more experienced divers. Macro enthusiasts will enjoy searching for nudibranchs, seahorses, and other tiny creatures nestled within the reef.
The marine park’s calm, warm waters and relatively shallow depths make it ideal for beginners and seasoned divers alike. Combined with its proximity to the city, it’s an accessible yet stunning destination for anyone keen to discover Borneo’s underwater treasures.
