The Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), native to the lush rainforests of Borneo, is one of humanity’s closest relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA. With reddish-brown fur and long, muscular arms, they can weigh up to 100 kg and stand around 1.5 metres tall, with a remarkable arm span that reaches up to 2 metres. They are arboreal creatures, spending the majority of their lives high in the forest canopy, using their long arms to swing effortlessly between trees. Their diet consists largely of fruits, particularly figs, but they also eat leaves, bark, and insects.
Bornean orangutans are known for their intelligence, often using tools such as sticks to extract honey or termites. However, these incredible creatures face severe threats from deforestation, illegal hunting, and habitat loss due to palm oil plantations. Over the past 60 years, their population has dropped by more than 50%, with only an estimated 104,000 individuals remaining in the wild today.
The Bornean Pygmy Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is the smallest subspecies of Asian elephant, native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo. Standing around 2.5 metres tall, they are noticeably smaller than their mainland counterparts, giving them a more endearing, juvenile appearance. With rounder faces, larger ears, and longer tails, they are often described as more “gentle” in appearance.
These elephants primarily inhabit the lowland forests and river valleys of Sabah, Malaysia, and parts of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Their diet consists of grasses, fruits, and bark, and they can consume up to 150 kg of vegetation per day.
Unfortunately, Bornean pygmy elephants are critically endangered, with only around 1,500 individuals left in the wild. Habitat destruction due to logging and palm oil plantations, as well as human-wildlife conflicts, pose significant threats to their survival. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure their future in the wild.

The sun bear is the smallest, most arboreal and least known of the bear family measuring between 120–150 cm long and between 60-78 cm high at the shoulder. Unlike other bears, the sun bear’s dark brown or black fur is short and sleek, probably due to the lowland climates it lives in. On their chest sits a pale beige horseshoe shape marking, which gives the sun bear its name, being said to resemble a setting or rising sun. Similar colour fur can be found around the muzzle and the eyes. Sun bears in Borneo live in the forest. In fact, they are so clever at hiding themselves in the trees that you would be extremely lucky if you see one in the wild.
