Borneo Rainforest Lodge – in the heart of Danum Valley

The Borneo Rainforest 5D4N package is a perfect choice for those wanting total jungle immersion during their holiday in Borneo whilst staying in charmingly rustic yet luxurious lodge accommodations. Borneo Rainforest Lodge is located alongside the Danum River flowing through Sabah’s largest protected Lowland Rainforest – Danum Valley Conservation Area. The lodge is around a 2-3 hour drive from the small town of Lahad Datu. Its remote location amid Danum Valley makes it the perfect setting for seeing wildlife and experiencing the natural beauty of the pristine rainforest.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge has a maximum of 60 guests staying there at one time (30 rooms). This provides an ‘exclusive’ experience complemented by personalised service, guided by experienced Nature Guides and good quality local dishes served at the Lodge open-plan restaurant. After a hard day of exploring, what better way to end the day than relaxing in the Lodge’s bar, taking in the views and enjoying a cool drink (or two) whilst listening to the soothing sounds of the forest in Danum Valley?

Borneo Rainforest Lodge – Trekking, Tubing, Canopy Walkway, or Just Chilling Out

During your stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley, you can do as much or as little as you want. During the day, join guided treks with your Nature Guide as you search for flora and fauna found in the surrounding rainforest in Danum Valley. There is a range of trails accessible from the Lodge ranging in distance from 0.5km up to 3.0km. As Danum Valley Conservation Area is home to more than 340 species of Birds, 124 species of Mammals, 72 species of Reptiles, 56 species of Amphibians and 200 species of plants per hectare, you can expect to see some pretty amazing wildlife. Or you can choose to chill out and just sit back and relax on your outdoor balcony taking in the sights and sounds of the surrounding rainforest. The choice is yours.

Besides the day trekking, you can go on Night Treks in search of nocturnal life, go tubing along the Danum River, visit an ancient Kadazan-Dusun Tribal Burial Cliff or go for a walk along the Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway near Borneo Rainforest Lodge has multiple viewing platforms, spanning approximately 300m in length and standing at 26m at the highest point, offering an up-close view of the 130 million-year-old rainforest canopy found in Danum Valley.

At Borneo Rainforest Lodge, there are four types of chalets offered. The chalet types we sell via our website are the Standard Chalet (Jungle View, with ceiling fan) and Deluxe Chalet (River view or Jungle view, with air conditioning). Both chalets are similar in terms of the layout offering large rooms with an en suite bathroom. The Deluxe Chalets are 20% larger, with a private balcony and an outdoor hot tub. Borneo Rainforest Lodge also offers Premium Deluxe Rooms and Premium Villas – prices for these are available upon request.

Trip Itinerary – Borneo Rainforest Lodge (5D4N), Danum Valley

DAY 1 (Meals: L/D)

Collected from Lahad Datu Airport (recommended flight from BKI to LDU is MH3012 BKI/LDU ETD 0710 hrs ETA 0805 hrs) or a hotel in Lahad Datu and transferred to the Lodge’s office in Lahad Datu for registration.

09:30hrs: Depart for Borneo Rainforest Lodge via a 2.5 hours overland journey on a gravel road.

12:30hrs: Lunch at the Lodge

14:00hrs: Join the “Nature Trail” and visit the “Canopy Walkway” as your introduction to the rainforest.

19:00hrs: Dinner at the Lodge

20:30hrs: Slide presentation at the Conference Room

21:00hrs: “Night Drive” in an open-air jeep in search of nocturnal animals

Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley

DAY 2 (Meals: B/L/D)

07:00hrs: Breakfast at the Lodge

9:00hrs: Join a guided trek to the Kadazandusun burial site – “Coffin Cliff”, then trek to the “View Point” for a bird’s eye view of the area. Descend to the “Jacuzzi Pool”.

12:30hrs: Lunch at the Lodge

14:00hrs: Optional – Trekking or chill-out time.

19:00hrs: Dinner at the Lodge

20:30hrs: Night Walk in search of nocturnal animals

DAY 3 & Day 4 (Meals: B/L/D)

9:00hrs: Join a guided trek (Day 3: Segama and Hornbill Trail, Day 4: Fairy Falls and Serpent Falls)

DAY 5 (Meals: B/L)

07:00hrs: Breakfast at the Lodge

09:00hrs: Optional – Jungle trekking (Belian, Elephant or Ginger Trail) or chill-out time.

11:30hrs: Lunch at the Lodge

12:30 or 13:30 – Check out from the lodge and depart on the scheduled transfer to Lahad Datu, a 2-and-a-half-hour drive. The scheduled transfers depart from Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley, at the following times depending upon your drop-off location: –

  • At 1230hrs, depart the lodge for Lahad Datu Airport for MH3019 (16:30 flight departure)
  • At 1330hrs, depart the lodge for Lahad Datu Town

Trip Pre-requisites – Borneo Rainforest Lodge (5D4N), Danum Valley

There are no specific prerequisites for joining the 5D4N Borneo Rainforest Lodge Package. However, we recommend you are average fitness or above and comfortable with trekking for a couple of hours in tropical conditions. Upon arrival at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, you will be asked to complete a liability form.

Notes – Borneo Rainforest Lodge Package, Danum Valley

Encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat are abundant in Danum Valley. However, sightings cannot be guaranteed. Leeches are plenty on all trails, and you should use leech socks when trekking in Danum Valley.

Package prices are per person and are based on 2 persons booking together and twin or double sharing one Chalet. Prices are valid for trips up to 31st March 2024. For packages booked between 1st March – 30th April & 15th July – 15th October, the peak season surcharge price is applicable.

  • Danum Valley Conservation Area

    The Danum Valley Conservation Area is significant at 438 square kilometres. It is a relatively undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah, Malaysia. The diversity of this area is extensive and exhibits tropical flora and fauna, including the rare Bornean orangutans, gibbons, mousedeer, clouded leopards and over 270 bird species.

    The area holds unique status in that before it became a conservation area, there were no human settlements within the region, meaning that hunting, logging, and other human interference were non-existent, making the area almost unique. It is managed by Yayasan Sabah for conservation, research, education, and habitat restoration training purposes. There have been proposals to nominate the site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
