Danum Valley is a conservation area in Borneo covering 438 square kilometres. It’s relatively undisturbed and has a hugely diverse and complicated ecosystem. So it’s easy to see why many visitors to Borneo make sure they spend time exploring Danum Valley. Indeed, a lot of Borneo’s tourism is specifically because of Danum Valley. If you’re into wildlife spotting, enjoy an energetic trek, appreciate moments of forest calm, or like to take in spectacular views, there’s something for you in Danum Valley. Here’s our rundown of the experiences that you won’t want to miss in Danum Valley.
Waterfalls Worth the Trek
Fairy Falls and Serpent Falls
These two waterfalls sit within a few hours’ trek of each other and offer you the chance to experience the rainforest’s sights and sounds up close. At Fairy Falls, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view across the canopy, which is a super rewarding sight after your walk through the forest. The trail itself is part of the appeal, as you’ll pass through dense vegetation and might spot wildlife along the way.
Tembaling Waterfalls
If you’re short on time but still want that classic “waterfall in the forest” experience, Tembaling is your answer. It’s roughly a 1–2 hour jungle trail from the Danum Valley Field Centre, making it one of the more accessible options. Once you arrive, you can cool off with a swim in the natural pool or simply relax and soak in the atmosphere. It’s a great choice for families or those who prefer a less strenuous walk.
Sungai Purut Waterfall and the 7-Tiered Pools
For a more adventurous day out, consider the trek to Sungai Purut. This journey takes about four hours from the Field Centre, but you’ll be rewarded with seven cascading pools that make for an unforgettable swim. This option is best if you’re staying at least 2–3 nights in Danum Valley and want to explore beyond the more popular spots. Make sure you’re prepared with a good guide, appropriate gear, and enough time to enjoy the experience without rushing.
Wildlife Encounters You Won’t Forget
Danum Valley is renowned for its wildlife. With over 340 species of birds and 124 species of mammals recorded, this pristine rainforest offers some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities in Southeast Asia. You’ll find extremely rare and endangered species here, including Bornean orangutans, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, gibbons, and the Sumatran rhino.
Early morning is prime time for wildlife activity. Join a sunrise walk with an experienced nature guide, and you might spot red leaf monkeys swinging through the canopy or hear the distinctive call of a gibbon echoing through the trees. Early walks are ideal for birdwatchers, too, and you might see or hear hornbills and the Great Argus pheasant.
Night excursions are equally rewarding. A guided night walk reveals the rainforest’s nocturnal residents. Civet cats, flying squirrels, and various reptiles become active after dark. While seeing truly elusive animals like the clouded leopard is never guaranteed, giving yourself enough time and going with experienced guides significantly improves your chances.
Walking and Trekking Adventures
The Canopy Walkway
The canopy walkway near Borneo Rainforest Lodge is 360 metres long and 27 metres above the ground. It offers an unparalleled view of the rainforest from the treetops, giving you a bird’s-eye perspective you simply can’t get from ground level. This is particularly brilliant for birdwatching, as you’ll be at eye level with hornbills, pittas, and other canopy dwelling species. The walkway is accessible to most fitness levels, making it a must during your visit.
Nature Trails Around the Field Centre
Guided nature walks around the Field Centre’s trails are perfect for getting to know the forest. These walks are less strenuous than longer treks and offer frequent sightings of monkeys, birds, and insects. For younger children, elderly visitors, or those with lower fitness levels, there’s a self guided nature trail on an elevated boardwalk that still provides an immersive rainforest experience.
Coffin Cliff and Viewpoint Trek
This morning jungle trek takes you to the ancient Kadazandusun burial site known as “Coffin Cliff” before continuing to a viewpoint that offers spectacular views across the valley. You’ll then descend to the “Jacuzzi Pool, a refreshing natural swimming hole where you can cool off after your walk. This trek combines cultural history, stunning views, and a chance to spot wildlife along the way.
Stunning Views and Scenic Spots
Menara Kayangan – Tower of Heaven
Menara Kayangan is an observation tower built atop Mount Silam, which we’re including in our tours from April 2026. From here, you’ll enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the Darvel Bay islands and the surrounding coastline. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate the scale of Borneo’s natural beauty before heading inland to the rainforest.
Tubing Down the Danum River
If you fancy something a bit different, try tubing down the Danum River. It’s a relaxing way to see the forest from a new perspective, drifting past overhanging vegetation and rocky outcrops. You might spot wildlife coming to the river’s edge to drink or kingfishers darting across the water.
