During the morning you will visit Mari Mari Cultural Village. Mari Mari Cultural Village aims to take you on a mini cultural adventure as you learn more about the culture of five indigenous ethnic groups found in Borneo - the farming Kadazan-Dusun, the bead-making Rungus tribe, the hunting Lundayeh, the sea gypsy Bajau, and the famous headhunting Murut.

After lunch at Mari Mari Cultural Village you will then travel to Klias Wetland Mangrove Forest Reserve to join a later afternoon river cruise in search of wildlife. The Klias Wetlands reserve is located ~ 2 hours south of Kota Kinabalu and is home to Proboscis Monkeys, Macaques, Monitor Lizards, Water Buffalo as well as bird life like the Kingfisher bird, Egrets and Hornbills. You’ll also, after dusk, enjoy a stunning display of fireflies. A beautiful combination.

Trip Itinerary - A Combo tour of Mari Mari Cultural Village & Garama River Wildlife Cruise, Sabah, Malaysia
09:15hrs: You will be collected from your hotel in central Kota Kinabalu. You will then be transferred to Mari Mari Cultural Village, a ~45 minutes journey.
10:00hrs: Upon arrival at Mari Mari Cultural Village you will be greeted by the village “Chief” and go through a ‘Welcome Ceremony’. You will then visit the five traditional homes of the following tribes:- Dusun, Rungus, Lundayeh, Bajau and Murut.
12:00hrs: After your cultural village tour you will watch a cultural performance and enjoy a buffet lunch.
13:00hrs: You will depart from Mari Mari Cultural Village. You will be transferred back to Kota Kinabalu for the Garama Cruise section of your tour (your minibus / coach will be collecting other customers from hotels in Kota Kinabalu before departing for Klias Wetlands). You will then travel by coach south from Kota Kinabalu. The journey takes 2 – 2.5 hours passing through countryside and villages. Upon arrival, coffee & tea will be served with some local, homemade cakes.
16:00hrs: You will board the boat to start your afternoon wildlife river cruise (on board a comfortable and safe fiberglass boat). The cruise will take some ~1.5 hours journey down the Garama River. Be on the lookout for Macaques, Silver Langur (or ‘Silver-Leaf Monkey’) and the highlight of the river cruise, the Proboscis Monkey.
You might also watch the sun set while cruising back to the river lodge.
18:00hrs: Enjoy a traditional Malaysian buffet style dinner. Catch a glimpse of fireflies slowly lighting up and decorating the mangrove trees.
19:00hrs: Listen to the crickets singing while you walk back to the coach. Depart back to Kota Kinabalu. You will arrive back at your hotel around 21:30hrs.

This trip is suitable for all persons. If you have young children you should be prepared for a late finish. Minimum 2 persons booking together.

Recommended Packing List - Mari Mari Cultural Village & Klias River Wildlife Cruise
Hat, raincoat, insect repellent, sun cream, comfortable shoes / footwear, comfortable cotton T-shirt with long or short pant, binocular, camera and personal medications (if needed), bottle of drinking water for the coach journey. Please also take a copy, or photo, of your passport with you in case there are police checkpoints on the way to Klias Wetland Mangrove Forest Reserve.

You might change minibuses in Kota Kinabalu after you arrive back from Mari Mari Cutural Village and before starting your journey for the Garama River Cruise - we will advise you at time of booking if this will happen for your trip. Please note the Fireflies may not been seen at the Garama River if there is heavy rainfall.
