Mount Kinabalu
Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Southeast Asia at 4,095 metres, is the crown jewel of Malaysian Borneo. Situated within the UNESCO-listed Kinabalu National Park in Sabah, this granite massif attracts climbers, nature enthusiasts, and researchers alike. The ascent to the summit, known as Low’s Peak, is a challenging yet rewarding trek that offers breathtaking views over the mist-shrouded valleys and forests below.
The mountain is a biodiversity hotspot, home to an astonishing array of flora and fauna. Its diverse ecosystems range from tropical lowland forests to alpine meadows, supporting species such as the rare Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, and numerous carnivorous pitcher plants. The park is also a sanctuary for unique wildlife, including the Bornean orangutan, clouded leopard, and a remarkable variety of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
At the mountain’s base, the town of Kundasang offers a cooler climate and a stunning landscape of rolling hills and vegetable farms. Visitors can explore the Kundasang War Memorial, dedicated to prisoners of war who perished during the infamous Sandakan Death Marches of World War II. Nearby, the Poring Hot Springs provide a relaxing retreat, with natural sulphur baths and a canopy walkway through the rainforest.
With its rich biodiversity, cultural significance, and adventure-filled landscapes, Mount Kinabalu and its surroundings offer an unforgettable experience for travellers seeking both natural beauty and historical depth in the heart of Borneo.
