Be greeted by the beautiful gaze of a young Orang Utan. Their eyes carry so much emotion you immediately want to protect them.A ranger comes out to feed them on a specially designed feeding platform. They encourage you to stay silent so as not to scare or harass the apes as they go through the rehabilitation process. Here, a mother (with her baby) takes the lead in helping herself to a few bunches of tasty bananas. The Orang tans also like to play along the ropes leading up to the feeding platform. Watch them frolic, hang around and sometimes fall off!A juvenile Orang Utan sat on the edge of the platform, literally a couple of metres away from you. Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia

Tour Description

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre offers you a glimpse of the life of the famed 'Wild man of Borneo'. The centre was first opened in 1964 with the aim of returning orphaned, injured or displaced Orang Utans back in to the wild. Many orphans  have successfully undergone the rehabilitation process and have bee released in to the surrounding Kabili-Sepilok Forest. So come and meet this beautiful creature in its natural habitat as they learn to survive once more in the jungles of Borneo.

The highlight of this trip is during feeding time at the specially built platform when the apes slowly appear from the trees and gather waiting to be fed by the rangers. Even before the feeding session starts the amazing apes will start to gather. You will tend to see younger Orang Utans, as the mature males have successfully rehabilitated in to the surrounding rain forest and are self sufficient. Being younger, they are also more playful and cheekier! Expect one or two apes to come up on the platform and take a closer look at you, sometimes a very close look. So remember to stay quiet , keep a respectful distance from them and hold on to your camera.

As well as seeing the 'men of the forest', there are also nature trails to explore to see the wildlife, flora and fauna of the area. The walks vary from 250m to 5km - it's down to how energetic and adventurous you feel.

This is also an ideal half day trip to combine with a visit to the Labuk Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Choose this option and you get the rare opportunity to see two of Borneo's more famous wildlife inhabitants in the same day. Click Here to find out more about this trip . . . . Click Here
