Diving with Qualified Dive Professionals
Diving with PADI Professionals
The various International Professional Diving Associations apply strict training standards and limit instructor’s activities according to their certification levels. This allows diving students to be confident that their diving course is being taught by someone qualified to teach it. Someone who can safely, and ably, teach the diving skills the students have chosen to learn. So ensure you dive with qualified, active status Dive Professionals for diving trips and diving courses.
The table below shows the minimum PADI professional level authorized to undertake all elements of each course or diving experience, (although certain parts of some may be conducted by other qualified personnel according to PADI Standards). Please note that the PADI professional must be in ‘teaching status’ to deliver the course or experience.

A PADI dive professional is expected to show their PADI diving certification card to students at the start of their course and to certified divers they are guiding. They should also be pleased to show it if a diver asks to see it. Details of how to check this, to ensure they are qualified to teach you, are given below.

Above are two PADI Divemaster Certification Cards, they come in variety of styles but these are the main two. Below are the reverse side of these cards (Sorry for the photos). The main you should be looking for is the paragraph that has the words "ACTIVE STATUS". You need to make sure that the year is the current year.

The next group of Certification Cards are for PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer MSDT (PADI Instructor for Specialities) and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor OWSI. This time the cards have a yellow sticker (Supplied by PADI) that states the TEACHING STATUS year. Which one is valid for 2008?

The photograph above shows a mock-up of a PADI professional card, annotated to show elements that should be checked to ensure validity. ‘Teaching Status’, PADI’s confirmation that the holder is registered and current, can be confirmed by checking the date on the hologram decal displayed on the card. New decals are provided every year on renewal and are attached to the card by the holder, so locations may vary.
Remember – if your instructor cannot prove his/her credentials, then you cannot be certain that he/she can certify you or teach you in a safe manner.
