AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty

The AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty Course is being offered by Dive@BorneoDream to inform both divers and non-divers about the plight of the world's coral reefs. The course describes how coral reefs function and why they are so important. It also reviews why many reefs are in serious trouble and what individuals can do to prevent further decline.

Participants begin the course by reading Chapter Four of the AWARE – Our World, Our Water manual (this is only available in English). Then you watch the 'Protect the Living Reef video', which is available in either diver or snorkellers version. This can be done independently or with one of our instructors. Learning continues with an instructor-led knowledge development session guided by colourful, photo-filled lesson guides. Once you have completed and reviewed the program’s Knowledge Review, participants will earn the AWARE – Coral Reef Conservation Specialty certification.

There is no minimum age or experience for this course.

Areas that we will cover are:-

  1. An introduction to Project AWARE.
  2. The importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and coastal areas.
  3. Coral reef and reef inhabitant biology, association and competition.
  4. The status of the world's coral reefs and detrimental land-based and ocean-based activities that put reefs in peril.
  5. Suggestions and information about actions that may help to protect reefs, including responsible diving and snorkeling practices.

This programme nicely links with other PADI programmes and courses such as the Seal Team, Skin Diver, Discover Snorkeling and of course the Project AWARE Speciality Programme. Total course duration is about 0.5 days.

PADI Naturalist Diver

Purpose — The PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty course has three main purposes:-

  1. Create an awareness. The submarine world is different from the terrestrial world. Those who venture underwater are in a unique position to observe and interact with organisms entirely different than those on land. In a sense, those who enter the underwater world are a privileged group, they have first-hand personal experiences with aquatic life.
  2. Evoke a sense of responsibility. With any privilege comes responsibility. It is the responsibility of recreational divers to accept and foster a sense of respect for aquatic organisms.
  3. Expand the public’s knowledge of the aquatic environment. As the saying goes, knowledge is the key to understanding. This course provides participants with basic introductory information about aquatic organisms. The course is designed to present such information in an entertaining and engaging way. It is not an academic treatment of aquatic biology. Rather, it is intended to encourage the participant to find out more about the aquatic realm either independently or through other educational programs. Particular attention is given to dispelling myths about potentially dangerous aquatic life by providing accurate, factual information about animals such as sharks, eels, jellyfish and others.

Overview of academic topics:-

  1. Introduction to the aquatic realm. Introduces participants to the aquatic realm. A comparison of the land and aquatic environments acts as a vehicle for illustrating how different the two environments are.
  2. Aquatic life mythology and human perceptions of aquatic life. This module addresses potentially dangerous aquatic life by dispelling myths through accurate, factual information about animals such as sharks, barracuda, sting rays and others. The module also addresses the way we perceive aquatic life in general, particularly those regarded as harmful to people.
  3. Survey of aquatic life and relationships between aquatic animals. A brief but comprehensive overview of all the major types of organisms which live in aquatic environments. Included in this topic is a brief overview of predator/prey and symbiotic relationships between aquatic animals.
  4. Responsible human interactions with aquatic life. An overview of the numerous ways divers can interact with aquatic life. This module interprets the pros and cons of each interactive activity and can act as a springboard for launching non-divers into an entry-level certification program. Additionally, it acts as the cognitive bridge for the open-water portion of the course on the Specialty Diver path.

Overview of open-water dives

  1. Open-water Dive One–Dive goals:
    1. Preservation of the aquatic environment by avoiding potentially destructive contact with aquatic organisms and the bottom.
    2. Field identification of local, common aquatic organisms.

  2. Open-water Dive Two–Dive goals:
    1. Preservation of the aquatic environment by avoiding potentially destructive contact with aquatic organisms and the bottom.
    2. Field observation of symbiotic and predator/prey interactions between aquatic organisms.
    3. Locate indications of impact by man on the local dive site and suggest possible causes.

The minimum age is 10 years and they must certified at least PADI Open Water Diver or similar. Duration of course will be 1 day.

PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Diver

We believe this is the most important course any new, old or experienced diver can take part in. We do not know of anybody who has completed this course with ourselves or any other Instructors or Divemasters we are aware of, who did not say ‘My diving has improved’.

In fact, the most common thing we see with divers is that they are generally over weighted, this can be due to many reasons. From 'I never lost those extra kilos from training'  to 'I like being heavy, heavy is safe' . . . etc etc.

So, start today and be a better diver, gracefully gliding through the underwater world.

The purpose of the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course is to assist all divers in polishing their buoyancy control beyond the Open Water Diver level. The goal of PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy training is to enhance the student’s buoyancy control abilities through knowledge development and skills practice.

Minimum age is 10 years with a certification of at least PADI Open Water Diver or similar. The course has two (2) ocean dives and is usually completed in 1 day.

This program is designed for classroom presentation only, no dives are required. This program could be conducted in conjunction with other specialties such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Naturalist, AWARE Fish Identification and other programs such as Discover Snorkeling, Skin Diver course, etc.

PADI Underwater Digital Photographer

This course is great for anybody thinking about starting out in the world of underwater digital photography or for those wanting to obtain better results from their time spent below the surface. The course is open to divers as well as snorkellers.

The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course is a two-part (Level One and Level Two) introduction to digital underwater photography centred around today’s point-and-shoot digital cameras. The course helps student divers develop the knowledge, skills and practical techniques necessary to obtain excellent photographs with a digital camera, even on their first photo dive. It is a materials-driven course intended for a broad audience – snorkellers, Discover Scuba Diving participants, Open Water Diver students and certified divers.

Level One training is open to snorkellers, Open Water Diver students* and certified divers. Students who successfully complete Level One may receive a PADI certification card. You may conduct Level One skill development in a pool/confined water or in open water. After students successfully complete Level One, they may move on to Level Two to learn how to make their photographs even better.

Level Two expands what they need to know about file formats, resolution settings, making their images lighter or darker, getting good colour, composing their photo, downloading photographs into their computer and adjusting them to look their best. Level Two training is open to snorkelers and certified divers. You conduct Level Two skill development in open water. Participants who successfully complete Level Two skill development qualify for the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty certification.
