Geography

Malaysia sits between 1 and 6 degrees north of the equator. Borneo is the third largest island in the world, spanning some 774,000 hectares the east of Peninsular Malaysia which is split between Indonesia in the south, Brunei on the west coast and Malaysia in the north split between Sabah and Sarawak.

The island of Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea to the North, the Sulu Sea to the north east, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Straits to the East and the Java Sea to the south.

Borneo's highest peak at 4101mtrs is Mt Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia which also makes Borneo the sixth highest island in the world.  It is a mountainous country with tropical rainforests and coastal swamp plains intersected by many rivers resulting in diverse ecosystems supporting many unique flora and fauna.

Climate

You will read that it has a classic tropical climate but what does this really mean if you are visiting here?

There is rarely any difference in the temperature - on a daily basis you can expect to enjoy temperatures around 28-31 degrees Celcius. It is stated in the guide books that there are two rainy seasons but in reality as a visitor you will not really be able to tell if you are in the middle of the rainy season as it doesn't fall non-stop like in the typical a monsoon areas further north. It will probably rain most days but it is unusual for the rain to last more than an hour and although usually quite a torrential downpour it dries away very quickly after it rains so it shouldn't spoil your holiday plans at all. If you are planning to travel to the higher ground in the interior of Sabah then yes, it will get much colder so you will need some suitable clothing (although if you don't bring any it is possible to purchase warmer clothing in Kota Kinabalu).
