Marine Research FoundationWeb site: http://mrf-asia.org The Marine Research Foundation is a non-profit research foundation based in Kota Kinabalu and incorporated under the Trustees Act of 1951. Established to further the understanding of marine ecosystems and their associated diverse flora and fauna in Southeast Asia and other Indo-Pacific sites, the Foundation carries out a number of projects related to biodiversity assessment and conservation, and seeks to provide management-oriented solutions to Government administrations and conservationists In Malaysia, MRF has developed a project to trial Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) in the Sandakan trawl fishery, and linked up with the Sabah Department of Fisheries and the Sandakan Boat Owners Association with funding from the GEF Small Grants Programme. As summed-up by Simon Hong, President of the Fishing Boat Owners Association, “All in all, it is a win-win arrangement, helping preserve the livelihood of Sabah fishermen while at the same time saving our valuable marine heritage”. The foundation has also implemented foraging ground studies on marine turtles, using laparoscopy to determine gender ratios in the wild and maturity data for these endangered turtles. This project provides crucial population dynamics data for effective marine turtle conservation in Sabah, Malaysia, but the results will be applicable throughout Southeast Asia. Without such data sets, authorities will always be unaware of wild sex ratios, recruitment rates into juvenile and adult life stages, and lacking the most valuable early-warning systems for understanding the impacts of long-term conservation and management measures on marine turtles.
MRF recently strengthened its conservation activities in Papua New Guinea, and expanded its main operations there from one single village to seven, with funding support from the Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council. The communities from each of these villages have partnered with MRF to save the critically endangered leatherback turtle, through nightly beach patrols, on-going research and monitoring, and public awareness activities. The foundation built in some incentive schemes this past season whereby the communities each received some form of development aid, be it in the form of materials to build a church, or new furniture for a school, and this has translated into an improved working relationship.
