Coral AmbassadorsCoral Ambassadors is Borneo Dream’s own initiative, born of the belief that individuals are more likely to change their destructive habits if they have direct experience of the environment they are likely to damage and see for themselves the consequences that could result from their actions. Coral bombing and poisoning, along with poor environmental practices, are a common cause of major damage to coral eco-systems and the marine environment. It is a sad fact that the people responsible for these practices are the least likely to have the resources needed to dive and experience reefs, and a bitter irony that they also have the highest dependency on them for their food and livelihoods. This is where Borneo Dream helps. Through the Coral Ambassadors programme, which was prototyped in Kudat under the aegis of WWF, the company provides free diving experiences and marine education to economically disadvantaged individuals with the intention that they return to their communities, spread the word about bad and good practices and cease activities that damage the environment. Of course, it’s not sufficient just to ask people to stop doing something that is probably habitual and, more importantly, economically important to them. That is why Borneo Dream runs these programmes alongside other conservation initiatives, such as the WWF Kudat-Banggi project, that take a holistic approach to conservation and provide realistic and viable alternatives. In this context, the Coral Ambassadors programme helps to bridge the gap between poor and good practices by providing an impetus for change at an individual level. We have seen some very good results from the programme and feel excited at the prospect of expanding it to other regions. Return to previous page Click Here Making your dreams come true in Borneo. |
