Black Tip Reef Shark in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

As Sharks tend to like deeper offshore waters we do not often see them in the tropical shallow waters of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park which is located 15 minutes by boat transfer in front of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo.

Occasionally we will come across a juvenile Bamboo Shark, Black Tip Reef Shark or Nurse Shark at the various coral reef dive sites we visit all accessible by day trip from Kota Kinabalu. Sometimes we come across a larger, adult Shark which is always exciting to see.

Billy, our Rebreather Instructor, is usually the lucky one to see larger 1.5  – 2 metre Black Tip Reef Sharks along deeper coral reefs when he goes scuba diving on his Closed Circuit Rebreather. As a Rebreather makes no noise (unlike bubbles when diving on open circuit) marine life, including sharks, does not get scared off and Billy often to gets to see close up some fascinating marine life during his dives.

I was lucky enough to spot a 1.5 metre Black Tip Reef Shark when I was guiding a dive last weekend at around 15m on a coral reef near Pulau Sapi in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. It was around 10 metres away when we first saw it. It then came back to slowly swim by us around 10m – 15m away. What an awesome experience!

You can enjoy a video taken by Billy when diving on his Closed Circuit Rebreather of a passing shark:-

Seahorse Spotted in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park near Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

I joined Borneo Dream customers at the weekend for a scuba diving day trip to nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park located in front of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. We went scuba diving along a coral reef site located near Pulau Gaya and Pulau Sapi.

Seahorse on Coral Reef

Seahorse on Coral Reef

The dive was lovely – good visibility, plenty of sunlight and a gentle drift along a sloping coral reef. Halfway through the dive we came across a Seahorse – a fantastic spot in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP). The Seahorse was resting on top of some hard coral and, as it heard the noise of the bubbles from our diving customers, it moved slowly down underneath soft coral as the divers watched on from a safe distance so not to stress the Seahorse.

As Sabah is located in the Coral Triangle it’s waters are home to a wide variety of tropical marine life. Every time I come out scuba diving in the Marine Park I am pleasantly surprised by the marine life we come across diving along coral reefs fringing Gaya, Sapi, Manukan and Sulug. Seeing a Seahorse made my Sunday morning dive complete!
