Cheese after first dive mmmmmm

When we are having Camembert, Brie (both made in Sabah) and fresh mango’s during a surface interval on a Borneo Dream scuba diving trip it can only mean one thing – Bertram is back in town!! Bertram is a friend or Borneo Dream and first dived with Billy when we worked in the Seychelles. Since then he has been to visit us three times in Sabah, Borneo with his current holiday being his fourth visit to Sabah in six years.

Bertram and a Cuttle Fish

Bertram always likes to make sure he gets the most from his holiday’s to Sabah – and he does this with the help of Borneo Dream. In previous holidays he has dived from Kota Kinabalu – including diving the wrecks, Mayne Rock, Pulau Tiga and Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park – diving at Sipadan and Layang Layang, visited the Kinabatangan River and completed his PADI Divemaster Internship with us. This holiday is no different :)

Rebreather Courses in Sabah

Rebreather Courses in Sabah

This holiday Bertram, along with leisure diving and a trip to Turtle Island & the Kinabatangan River, he will be learning to dive on a Closed Circuit Rebreather with our TDI Rebreather Instructor, Billy. Anybody who knows Bertram and Billy will know they will have lots of fun over the five days Bertram completes the TDI Air Diluent Closed Circuit Rebreather Diver course. I also expect more cheese, mango’s and crackers on our boat :). Bertram starts his Rebreather course this week so expect photos, and a blog, to follow.

If you too, like Bertram, would like help on arranging your holiday in Sabah then just contact the Borneo Dream team. Whether it be scuba diving, wildlife, learning to dive on a Rebreather we will be ready to help.

We took them for a day trip to nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park where they joined in a try dive via the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience and guided snorkeling along shallow coral reefs.  Most of the students and teachers joined a try dive whilst the students who were already certified divers enjoy a day of leisure diving in TARP. It was a perfect day to end a great week for the students.

International School Seychelles enjoy their second School Expedition to Sabah with Borneo Dream

We recently welcomed back Martin Kennedy for his second ISS (International School Seychelles) school expedition to Sabah, Borneo – with the full expedition arranged by Borneo Dream. Joining Martin was Jane Lincoln (the Headmistress) and a group of students. Martin previously visited Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for their first school expedition a couple of years a go. He enjoyed himself so much during their first visit that he came with another group of students so he could introduce to some of the natural beauty Sabah has to offer.

During their 8D7N itinerary the school group enjoyed the following:

  • Snorkeling, scuba diving and fast RIB rides in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park with the Borneo Dream Team.
  • Seeing wildlife at the Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves. They were very lucky and saw the critically endangered Bornean Pygmy Elephant during three of their river cruises.
  • Seeing Orang-Utans at Sepilok Sanctuary and Proboscis Monkeys at Labuk Bay Sanctuary
  • White water rafting along the Kiulu River.
  • And free time for exploring Kota Kinabalu and shopping. Continue reading

“Borneo Dream were fantastic!

When I sent details of what I wanted to do during my planned holiday in Sabah, Borneo along with my budget to Borneo Dream and to another agency, the other one came straight back and said it was impossible without doubling the budget unless I wanted to stay in really run-down places and go on pretty unsafe trips.

Joanne from Borneo Dream, on the other hand, came back with a range of suggestions and extremely helpful comments. Email responses were almost immediate, and everything from booking our holiday to payment ran extremely efficiently.

In Sabah, Borneo itself, there wasn’t any sign of anything run down or unsafe on any of the trips / hotels Joanne booked for us! Instead, we had an absolutely fantastic 8 days there, cramming in more than we had thought possible. When we needed a bit of logistical help (e.g. when I had forgotten to print off the itinerary and needed to know pick-up times and places) Joanne was again instantly available and went out of her way to help us out. Borneo has been a source of bird nests, used in bird nest soup, for the Chinese market since the 17th century. The Chinese have long believed that the nests have medicinal qualities.

One of the most well known cave systems in Borneo for collecting birds nests is at Gomantong in Sabah. The collection of nests at Gomantong caves is strictly monitored to ensure sustainability, and many believe these are the best managed caves in the world. Continue reading
